Ontario Budget 2018: Changes Made to Aid Seniors

The number of senior Ontarians is quickly growing, and it is estimated that, by 2041, 25% of the population in Ontario will be 65 and over - almost doubling since 2016. In response to this, as well as other factors, the Ontario Government has decided to implement new programs as part of the 2018 provincial budget to further assist seniors, those 65 years of age and older.

In doing so, the provincial government is attempting to improve the life of seniors and help them to remain in their homes longer.

July 1 of each year marks the beginning of a new provincial tax credit benefit year in Ontario. To be eligible to receive these benefits, it is important that you have filed your previous year’s tax return. This is because benefits are based, in part, on your previous years income.

Most of these benefits are filed on a monthly basis. If you have failed to file your tax return, you will not receive the monthly instalments of any benefits you are otherwise eligible for, however, they will be reinstated once you file your return and it has been assessed.
