Covid Benefits Coming to End

Since 2020 the Canadian government has been helping business owners across Canada with benefit programs to help cover fixed costs during lockdowns, as well as to boost rehiring as the country begins to reopen.

But as we come to the end of the year, these programs are coming to a close. Here’s a quick recap of where we stand right now:

Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy

The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy or CEWS, provided benefits that allow business owners to hire new workers or increase hours and wages. It is a subsidy paid to business owners on eligible salaries or wages.

The CEWS program ended on October 23, however, you have up to 180 after a given claim period to apply.

The deadline for period 16 is December 2, 2021.
The deadline for period 17 is December 30, 2021.
The deadline for period 18 is January 27, 2022.
The deadline for period 19 is February 24, 2022.
The deadline for period 20 is March 14, 2022.
The deadline for period 21 is April 21, 2022.

Canada Recovery Hiring Program

The Canada Recovery Hiring Program or CHRP began in June of this year. It also helps business owners hire and pay workers by offering a subsidy and eligible remunerations. As discussed in a previous blog, eligibility for this program is similar but the calculation of benefits is different.

The CHRP overlapped with CEWS for a number of claim periods, but now it is the only available subsidy. This program is scheduled to end on November 20, 2021 and you have up to 180 days after any given claim period to apply.

The deadline for period 17 is December 30, 2021.
The deadline for period 18 is January 27, 2022.
The deadline for period 19 is February 24, 2022.
The deadline for period 20 is March 14, 2022.
The deadline for period 21 is April 21, 2022.
The deadline for period 22 is May 19, 2022.

Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy

The Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy or CERS gives business owners a subsidy on rent or mortgages paid by qualifying business, not-for-profits and charitable organizations. This subsidy is paid directly to the tenants so that landlords do not need to be involved.

While this program also ended on October 23, you still have time to file for the last few claim periods of the subsidy as you have 180 days after any given period to apply.

The deadline for period 9 is December 2, 2021.
The deadline for period 10 is December 30, 2021.
The deadline for period 11 is January 27, 2022.
The deadline for period 12 is February 24, 2022.
The deadline for period 13 is March 14, 2022.
The deadline for period 14 is April 21, 2022.
